At present, UMS has set up research and development department since the beginning of 2007 to study various coal applications in many industries. The briquette project, an example of research and development project, is developed to use with stoker coal fired boiler with better efficiency and increase coal value as well.
Moreover, research and development department is developing Coal Gasification Project, the process which coal will be transformed to gas phase, in order to substitute Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or Natural Gas for Vehicles (NGV) which used for ceramic and glass industries. Both gases are more expensive than coal in term of heating value per unit.
Research and development department has concept to study coal applications from foreign countries to apply with domestic industries continually.
